Chapter 10 SMALL GROUP COMMUNICATION

Now in this chapter we learn about..yeah..communication within a small group.. hehehhh
Okay lets get straight to the point now shall we? We shall? Can I? Can I? Can I?
Yes..Okay..Okay.

Now firstly we have SMALL GROUPS AND TEAMS

Lets start with

  4. Organizing Rules
  5. Self-Perception as a Group
THE TEAM

  1. Specific Purpose
  2. Clearly Defined Roles
  3. Goal Directed
  4. Content Focused
VIRTUAL GROUPS AND TEAMS

Teams can be both in face-to-face or in the virtual world via video/audio interaction
(conference calls or video conference calls)

Opening > Feedforward > Business > Feedback > Closing 

small GROUP FORMATS

  • The Round Table :  We arrange ourselves in circular or semicircular pattern
  • The Panel : Group members are experts but participate informally
  • The Symposium : Each member delivers a prepared presentation
  • The Symposium-Forum : 1. A symposium with prepared speech 2. Forum
Now we're gonna talk about POWER!!! Muahahahah!!!

POWER IN THE SMALL GROUP

is what enables one person to control the behavior of others..

  • Legitimate Power : By rules - appointed group leader
  • Referent Power : By agreement
  • Reward Power : By positive reinforcement
  • Coercive Power : By negative reinforcement or punishment
  • Expert Power : By establishing yourself as the expert in the context
  • Information Power : By establishing yourself as the person can communicate and inform the best


IDEA_GENERATION GROUPS

A small groups that exist solely to generate ideas and often follow a pattern called brainstorming (a technique for bombarding a problem and generating as many ideas as possible)

  • Brainstorm Rule 1 : Don't criticize
  • Brainstorm Rule 2 : Strive for quantity
  • Brainstorm Rule 3 : Combine and extend ideas
  • Brainstorm Rule 4 : Develop the wildest ideas possible
PERSONAL GROWTH GROUPS

Referred to as a support groups and aim to help members cope with particular difficulties.
  • The Encounter : Sensitivity groups
  • The Assertiveness Training : To increase the willingness of its members to stand up
  • The Consciousness-Raising : To help people cope with the problems society confront them with
INFORMATION SHARING GROUPS

People form ideas and share them with one another.
  • Educational : Contributing to the academic circle
  • Focus : Affirming the existence of the information
PROBLEM-SOLVING GROUP
