Chapter 4 THE SELF

11/2/2014

WHO IS THAT GIRL I SEE STARING STRAIGHT BACK AT ME?

Today's lesson was rather interesting. How many of us have pondered about who we really are?

WHO AM I?
WHAT MAKES ME, ME?
WHY AM I HERE?
DO I HAVE A PURPOSE IN LIFE? (That do not involve eat, sleep, study, repeat)

Many of us have a certain idea of who we think we are be it tall, short, pretty, plump, skinny, confident, athletic, etc. Simply put, our self concept is the image of who we are.

So how do we develop these ideas about ourselves, you ask?

1. Social Comparison.
Everyone has done this at some point in their life. How often do we look at someone else and admire their sense of style for instance. Makes us go "Why do they look so perfect? Where do they find the time, energy and inspiration to look that good??" But the real question is, "Why do I look like I just woke up... every minute of the day?!"

So what do we do?
We conform to society and what they perceive is right. In other words, we emulate what we see and pick up similar sense of style.

2. Other's Images of You
As much as we deny it, other people's perception of us matters to us to a certain extent. For example, when results of an examination are released, what do we do? We ask our friends how did they do. But why do we ask even? Does knowing our friend's result change ours? Of course it does not, but it does feel a lot better if our results aren't that far off compared to our friends. Heh heh heh

3. Self Interpretations and Evaluations
This is when we evaluate ourselves for what we believe in. Our stand to our moral standards, beliefs and principles in life plays a huge part in moulding a person. That's what makes us all different! Yet really we are all the same. We all love food. :) Okay, no that was a joke, we all have beliefs and aspirations in life. And food, we all love food.

4. Cultural Teachings
How we have been brought up plays a huge part when it comes to shaping someone. Society, but more specifically our culture itself teaches us from an early age what is considered acceptable and what isn't.

Besides the above, we also learned about Self-awareness, Self-esteem, and Self-disclosure.

A brief summary of the above would be;
  • Self Awareness is how we discover ourselves by gaining a deeper understanding of who we are. This isn't only subjected to the individual themselves but others who assists us to be aware of your own being.
  • Self esteem is the level of confidence, trust and assurance to ourselves.
  • Self-disclosure is when we ourselves tell others about ourselves.

Oh! Look what we did as our class activity!

Each and every one of us had to list down characteristics of an individual with high self-esteem and subsequently low self-esteem on a piece of paper. Our lecturer, Mr Anwari then randomly called out our names to come upfront to write one characteristic each on the board. So tadaaaa! :D

VERBAL MESSAGES

POP QUIZ??! :O

Loud yet subtle chattering, soft whispers, students walking at the hallways, doors swinging open and shut.. Well, it felt just like about any other day before any lesson. But in midst of all that noise, one word POPPED OUT (no pun intended) did we just hear POP QUIZ??!

Our lecturer, Mr Anwari was nice enough to not have it on that day though. Pheww! :")

Today's lesson was based on a rather interesting group activity. We were all divided into groups and a topic was assigned to each. Our task was too discuss among ourselves on the given topic and come to a unified understanding of it. After that, we needed to discuss with other groups about what we understood about our topic. Due to time constraints, we had to come up with a plan. FAST. We subdivided each subtopic to every member and later shared what we understood from the given topics. As a group, i believe we fulfilled the objective.

Some of the things that we discussed are as follows ;

1. Cultural identifiers - Race and Nationality
                                - Affectional Orientation
                                - Age and Sex

2. Language Symbolizes Reality (Partially) - Intentional Orientation
                                                                - Allness

3. Language Expresses Both Facts and Inferences

4. Language Is Relatively Static.

"What we know of other people is only our memory of the moments during which we knew them. And they have changed since then... at every meeting we are meeting a stranger" - T.S. Eliot

Deep, isn't it? :)

5. Language Can Obscure Distinctions -Indiscrimination
                                                           - Polarization

That's all for this week's post. Till we meet again next week! Have a great weekend ya'll! :D
